Liposuction: What is it?

  • Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes fat from different areas of the body
  • Although liposuction is the most common name, the procedure is also known as body sculpting, lipoplasty, body contouring, tummy tuck (refers to the specific region of the stomach), tumescent liposuction, among other names that are either body area or technology specific
  • It is common mispelled as lyposuction, lipo suction, lipo sucktion, lypo sucktion, and lyposuction
  • It is most often performed by cosmetic surgeons, as well as properly licensed dermatologists in the US
  • It is intended to be a procedure that is only recommended for fat that is un-removable after proper exercise and diet
  • In the US alone in 2007, 456,828 liposuction operations were performed (Source). This number continues to grow exponentially as new technology makes the procedure safe and more efficient, and while prices become more competitive as more surgeons offer this service
