Cosmetic Surgery Liposuction FAQ: Part 2
6: Why do so many people have liposuction?
For men and women, an improvement in outward appearance helps bring about an improvement in quality of life and self confidence. People can become very dissatisfied with they way they look, to such an extent that it interferes with their day to day activities to be able to enjoy all the gifts of life. Some subtle but significant examples include enjoying what other people would take for granted, such as feeling comfortable in their clothing, having self confidence, going swimming, feeling good when going out socializing, among others. .
At a certain point, despite diet and exercise, localised bulges and disproportionately-sized areas of the body cannot be slimmed down any more. This means that some people’s desire for an improved body shape cannot be achieved without surgery. This is where lipoplasty can help the patient achieve the look that they want.
The benefits of having the liposuction surgery are both physical and emotional. On a physical level, clothes will fit better, the patient’s body will look better in the mirror, and when going out. This physical transformation change the patient’s self confidence and self image. The way others perceive the patient after liposuction may be different as well, which creates a positive feedback cycle of external reference points. Over time, the patient will feel much happier based on the improvement of their own self perception as well as the positive reference points they receive from other people after surgery.
To answer the question “why do people get liposuction?” here are statistics from a study by the ASAP (The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery)

7: How long does Liposuction take?
Liposuction surgery can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete depending on the extent of the procedure. Patients are usually able to go home on the day of the surgery, as well as have the option to stay the hospital for one or two days.
8: What will happen in the recovery period?
Bruising and swelling can be present for 2-4 weeks dependent upon the quantity of fat that is removed, the degree of the incision marks made by the surgeon, and the patient’s own healing rate. Painkillers ranging from Tylenol to vicodin can be used to relieve any discomfort or pain. Elastic post surgery bandages can be worn day and night for 3 weeks. Depending on your skin type, scars will be usually be small and will fade in time. Of course, good doctors will setup follow up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.
Patients can usually return to work after a few days, or 1-2 weeks. Many liposuction patients can go back to exercising in 12-14 days. This of course will depend on each individual patient.
9: What are some alternatives to liposuction?
The obvious ones are proper diet and exercise. The FDA website has a great section on liposuction alternatives below. Essentially, if one digs deeper into the real reasons behind getting the surgery, the whole process of “finding yourself” will be a lot more fulfilling and the solution a lot more complete. According to the FDA website:
“Some of the alternatives to liposuction are:
- Change diet to lose some excess body fat.
- Exercise.
- Accept your body and appearance as it is.
- Use clothing or makeup to downplay or emphasize body or facial features.”
There are also natural liposuction alternatives. These include ways to boost metabolism. Diet, exercise, yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, these particular liposuction alternatives relies on the body’s ability to rid itself of fatty tissue.
Some interesting alternatives also include seaweed wraps, and certain creams that claim to reduce the deposits of fat in certain body areas. However many of these products are not FDA approved and require more substantiated research.
This may sound like it is coming form your parents, but other liposuction alternatives include dressing to conceal body flaws and/or or simply ignoring them. Understandably, those that tend to be more vain, or in a business where physical looks effect your career path know that these alternatives can be difficult to accept when you know that change is possible and given social conditioning.
Several interesting alternatives are discussed on DocShop.com:
Lipodissolve™
The latest advance in non-surgical liposuction alternatives, Lipodissolve™ involves the injection of mild medications and enzymes into areas with unwanted fat. These chemicals cause the fat to dissolve, and it is flushed from the system through the patient’s urine. Though similar to mesotherapy, Lipodissolve™ is a more popular non-invasive body contouring technique in the United States because it uses different medications and offers a faster recovery time. Lipodissolve™ is effective for toning the face (especially the chin and neck area), as well as all parts of the body, and can also be beneficial in the reduction of cellulite. To learn more about this procedure, visit our Lipodissolve™ pages.
Mesotherapy
In Europe and South America, mesotherapy has long been a popular way to get the results of liposuction without surgery while also reducing cellulite. During mesotherapy, doctors use tiny injections of amino acids, medications, and holistic compounds to dissolve fatty tissue. Because the needles used in mesotherapy are so small, the procedure is virtually painless, and some patients see results after only one session. Visit our mesotherapy pages to learn more about this non-surgical liposuction alternative.
Thermage®
Thermage® is probably the most non-invasive body contouring option offered by plastic surgeons. This technique literally melts unwanted fat with the use of a heated laser that causes the patient’s collagen to tighten. Thermage® is effective for tightening the skin on the face as well as other areas of the body, and is frequently used as a non-surgical alternative to the popular face lift procedure. For patients looking to achieve the results of liposuction without surgery, Thermage® is an effective, pain-free option.
10. What is the best way to go about further research?
Despite the internet and Google’s mission to make relevant information useful and and accessible to the world, research for cosmetic procedure remains an important and highly customized one. The following guide posts may help in your journey to find your inner “10”:
Contextual research
This level of research includes finding general information and opinions about the topic. You are simply trying to find the landscape and map of the market and how it works.
Possible searches include: liposuction surgery, liposuction for men, liposuction men Los Angeles, liposuction options
Subject level research
By diving deep into a specific context, you can start finding more information about sub-sections. For example, the search for “liposuction alternative” yields many sources and each one has a very different take in regards to what constitutes “alternative”. You can expand the search to “spiritual alternatives”, to “natural alternatives”, to “losing weight alternatives”, which can include stomach rings and diet drugs.
Localized research
Ultimately lipoplasty is performed by a surgeon, preferably in your area. If not, you must have a planned trip to a foreign city or country and a plan for recovery and travel time given the logistics. It is important to explore the regionally well known surgeons and what their value proposition is in regards to price, skill level and overall credibility and your level of trust and relationship with the doctor.
Relationship building
Although liposuction is one of the least invasive plastic surgery options, having trust and an alignment of your goals with your doctor is a very important step to making the right decision. Go in for a consultation, and continue to build this relationship with the doctor as you plan out your finances and lifestyle changes in parallel with the timing of the surgery.
Commitment
Finally, putting some stakes in the ground. Pick the top 3 surgeons you have selected based on your research and visit their offices for a consultation. Write down your top 10 questions and jot down the doctor’s notes when in the meeting. Do follow-up research on their answers for your own confirmations. Remember, doctors have many patients, but we all only have 1 body.
